Saying Goodbye to 2012.

Hey guys, welcome to my last post of 2012.  It has been a long year for me and while my RL has not been that great in the last 12 months, I have accomplished a lot of stuff hobby wise. At the beginning of the year I set myself 7 goals (some of them 2 parters) that I wanted to achieve this year. While by the end of this post you will see I didn't meet very many of my goals, I do feel that I achieved a lot this year.

Intro to Dust Warfare! Part 1

Hey guys, I have a bit of news for you today.  Recently I was asked to start writing for a new blog on the What Would Patton Do? Network called Outpost Zero.  I will be doing a series of articles for them about a number of games including Dust Warfare, the new Iron Kingdoms RPG, and whatever other games I get motivated to write about.  While I highly encourage you to check out WWPD and Outpost Zero I will also be posting all the articles I write right here on 24 Hour Gamer Geek, just a week or so after they originally appear on Outpost Zero or any of the other Blogs in the WWPD Network.  My first article is part 1 of a multi-part series about Dust Warfare (and maybe some Dust Tactics too down the line).  Part 1 covers the back story or as I like to call it... the fluff to the Dust world.  Part 2, coming soon, goes more into the game mechanics of Dust Warfare.  Enjoy!

******************************************************************

Hey guys and welcome to my first post on the WWPD Network.  My name is Jay Powell but some of you may know me as HuronBH on the WWPD Forum or from around the web.  Starting with this post and moving on into the future I will be sharing with you insights and cool models, from the large variety of games that I play.  While the majority of my posts will show up here on Outpost Zero; I do also play Saga, Bolt Action, and occasionally Flames of War; so you may see posts from me occasionally in those sections as well.  Enough about me, now on to the topic at hand DUST WARFARE!

Tuesday Time Capsule #3

Hey guys, Huron here... Welcome to another Tuesday Time Caspule post!

This week I will be talking about a game near and dear to many of our hearts and which you can still find played occasional even though GW no longer supports it.  I am sure you have guessed it from the pic below... NECROMUNDA!

Tuesday Time Capsule #2

Hey guys, Huron here again.  Time for another Tuesday Time Capsule!

This week I thought I would share some Old School Chaos vehicles I found kicking around the Time Capsule case.  Starting off we have some Old School Rhinos all jazzed up and the turret from a Leman Russ battle tank that I converted into a Predator Tank for my original Death Guard army.

While I am not sure what the primed black rhino on the left was for, I am sure it was used in several of the myriad of unpaint or half painted chaos armies I built and rebuilt through out much of 3rd and 4th edition.  These armies were reform and changes daily sometimes being tweak and retweaked to cover all the different gods and traitor chapters.

Tuesday Time Capsule #1

Hey, Huron here bringing you a taste of my mini gaming past!

For the first Tuesday Time Capsule I thought I should share with you the most startling discovery I made when opening up the Time Capsule case.  I have long believed that my first Historical Mini Gaming experience was with Flames of War.  I originally picked up some Flames of War Russians back when the game was first becoming popular but ended up selling them off pretty quickly to a friend as the scale was pretty daunting to me.  Then when Huzzah Hobbies, my now LGS, opened up near me I gave the game a second look (Thanks to the store owner Chris who is an avid historicals fan).  This lead me down the slippery slope of Historical gaming where I now find myself with armies for Flames of War, Saga, Bolt Action, DBA, WAB, War & Conquest, etc.  I am even looking at building some 28mm Civil War Union and Rebel Troops for some Gettysburg (150 anniversary of the battle in 2013) refight scenarios, but that is something I will get into another time.

Back on track, so I though Flames of War was my first experience... But I was wrong.  When I opened the case the first thing that caught my eye (after the old school rhino painted metallic purple, more on that next time) was a 28mm WW2 US Infantrymen sitting amongst  the piles of fantasy and scifi minis.  After digging through the box this is what I found:

New Series Incoming!

Hey guys, Huron here again.  Today I want to share withing the background behind and give you a preview of a new series of articles that will be gracing my blog starting next week.  It is called Tuesday Time Capsule!  This past thanks giving while visit my parents I asked them if I could go up to the Attic to see if there was still any of my stuff up there from when I moved out back  in 2004, so 8ish years ago.  I was really looking for my old Magic Card collection to see if I had any old cards still that were worth anything.  However I came across some old miniatures cases, most of which where empty.  However one case... the one pictured below ended up being something of a goldmine.

Growing the Brotherhood

Hey guys, Huron here again with another post in what has become Nurgle Week!  So one of the big things I wanted to share was what plans I have for my Death Guard project.  Right now I am sort of in the "wouldn't this be cool" phase and haven't really settled on a specific army list I want to build.  It doesn't help that I have only played 2 games of 40k so far since the release of 6th Edition, but I am sure that will change as the army begins to take shape.

History of the Brotherhood

Hey guys, Huron here again. So I wanted to talk about my new Death Guard army some more.  The army is going to be called the Brothers in Pestilence and for those that haven't been playing against me for the last 10+ years this is going to be the 3rd rendition of my Death Guard.  The first Brothers army was built and painted at the end of 2nd Edition/ Beginning of 3rd Edition from around 1998 til 2002 or so.  It featured a Chaos Lord on a Bike, a few squads of Plague Marines in rhinos, 2 squads of 7 Chaos Marine bikers, some plague bearer daemon packs, and 2 possessed Predators and a possessed Dreadnought.

Mmm... Icey...

Hey guys, Huron here.  I'm sure by now many of you have heard of a youtuber calling herself "The Joey Berry".  No?  Well you should go check her out.  She provides weekly content for Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warhammer 40,000, Malifaux, and several other games (she needs to hurry up and start doing Warmachine or Hordes stuff!)

Anyways, though I have parted ways with Malifaux, I now many of you, my loyal fans (lol) still play and follow the game.  Joey just posted a cool video she stars in about Rasputina filmed by Al Carretta.  Check it out below.

Nice job Joey and Al, keep these kind of vids coming.  This kind of content really sets the bar for what it means to be a wargaming host on the internet!

Until next time loyal followers...

Return to Nurgle

Hey guys, so I finally have returned somewhat to my roots, or at least the roots of my previous blog, Blood & Blades.  I have slowly been trudging along at a new Deathguard army, which is really in the very earliest of stages.  Below are pics of my new Nurgle Chaos Lord.

Am I a Proper Wargamer?

Hey guys, Jay here again.  So I saw this set of questions over on Warpstone Pile, my friend Rich's Blog and it looked like fun, so I thought I'd share.   This of course spawned a horrible formatting nightmare as when you cut and past things in blogger now it takes the format, colors, and fonts from the previous page and applies them the pasted location.  However the actual editor in blogger doesn't show your the draft in the same font and background colors as it will end up with (until you hit preview) and allows for only a specific set of background colors (which does not include the background color of my blog).  Thankfully I know HTML so I just went in and fixed the problem in the code.

Enough of my problems, on to the questions:

Relic Knights: Black Diamond

What is Black Diamond? A technologically advanced Mercenary Organization that will sell it's services to the highest bidder.  The only way to make sure your enemies don't hire Black Diamond is to hire them yourself and hope your enemies don't offer them more money.  The forces of Black Diamond are currently lead by One Shot, the female pilot of a large relic walker armed with a huge Sniper Rifle.  Watch out for her and the hordes of Black Diamond Corpsmen sure to be supporting her, their Concentrated Fire ability can take down event the toughest of targets.  They are supported by a M8-Blitz Auto Tank which is immune to psychic attacks and can pump out damage from it's cannon in a steady stream.

Relic Knights: The Noh Empire

Who are the Noh Empire?  Fearsome demonic extra dimensional raiders and conquerors seeking to pillage and enslave the entire universe.  The Noh use brute force, terror, and fearsome advances to quickly engage with the enemy and break their lines.  Kasaro To, the Demon upon the giant Mechanical Chinese Lion pictured above is the Relic Knight charged by his fearsome hydra god to lead the conquest into the known universe and conquer all in his path. Accompanied by Azi, his personal cypher that links him to the currents of Esper Magic that flow throughout the universe, Kasaro To leads the hordes of his Demonic followers to battle.

Mmmhmmm... Relic Cra... Knights

Hey guys, Jay here again and today I would like to talk about Relic Knights, a somewhat new anime themed Scifi Skirmish game beginning released fully next year from the makers of Super Dungeon Explore, Soda Pop Miniatures and Cool Mini or Not..

The reason I say it is a somewhat new game is that several of the models have been around for several years in resin and metal and their has been a basic set of rules kicking round since Gencon of 2011.  However this past Sunday saw the end of a month long Kick Starter initiative to bring the game to a wider audience with all new plastic minis and expanded and enhanced game play.  The Kick Starter raise just over 900K and allowed those who pledge to get in on the ground floor of a great new game at a fairly low price point.

Goals

Back in January I set 7 Hobbies goals for myself.  I have been keeping track of my progress on each of them in a list in the right column of my old blog Blood & Blades, and I will continue to do the same now... as you can see to the right.  However I haven't really talked about them in real detail since the original post.

I thought it would be a good time to do a mid year (well mid and a bit) status update on exactly where I am with each and maybe share some photos of a few of them.

Netflix Review 1

Okay, time for my first Netflix recommendation.  I love it when Netflix adds new content as I am an avid devourer of movies and tv series.  I usually prefer to wait till a new season of a series has finished and then watch it in as few sittings as I can manage, usually 1-2.  I have had to start slowing myself down and not watching all the new stuff I am interested in as soon is it becomes available, as recently I have found myself in long spans of time with nothing new that I am interested in to watch.  Some of these dead spots have lead to finding some really great shows I never would have found other wise, but for the most part they are just full of sheer boredom and me either re-watching things or killing time with sub-par crap.

The show I want to talk about today is called Hell on Wheels, from AMC.  Hell on Wheels was AMC's second highest watched show last year behind The Walking Dead (according to Wikipedia).  The first season is a short 10 Episodes, each around 45 minutes long.  The show takes place in the post Civil War reconstruction era (one of my all time favorite periods of history) and is centered around the character Cullen Bohannon, an ex-Confederate Soldier out for revenge for the death of his wife and son while he was away fighting the war.  The setting for the showis in the main camp for the Union Pacific Railway as it is being built as part of the US Government's Transcontinental Reilroad project after the civil war, to which Cullen plays a big part.

While the main focus of the plot is on the building of the Railroad and Cullen finding the men responsible for his wife and son's death, there are are also several really fantastic sub plots weaved into a really complex and interesting web of stories between the main and supporting characters; as with many period piece shows of this caliber.  Hell on Wheels does a really good job of bringing you in and enthralling you in the stories of each character depicted while also shocking you with the harsh realities and bloody consequences of life lived on the frontier. I was really impressed at how much character development many of even the most exterior character went through in the 10 episodes of Season 1 and I am already scrambling to figure out how I am going to watch the new Season 2 episodes which begin airing on AMC on August 12th.

If you have access to Netflix, I highly recommend that you check out Hell on Wheels for yourself... though you probably shouldn't let the kids watch it do to the level of Blood, Gore, and Prostitution depicted in the series.

A New Beginning...

Hey guys and welcome to my new Blog, 24 Hour Gaming Geek.  This blog has been in planning for a while and I finally found some time this weekend (while recovering from a great Friday night!) to finally get it all put together.  So lets get too it, lots of stuff to talk about.

THE PURPOSE:

So why exactly am I starting a new blog?  Well that is a good question.  In the past I have always favored putting everything in one place.  When I wanted to go in a new direction or talk about something else I would just throw it up on my old Blog Blood & Blades, as it kept everything all in one place.  I have even recommend to others just to tweak their old blogs and modify them instead of starting all new ones.  So what drove me to chose a fresh start instead of just re-formatting and going from their?

Please excuse the mess.  My new Blog, 24 Hour Gamer Geek, will be ready shortly!
