...Tiger By It's Tail...

Finished up a Tiger 1 for my German Bolt Action army recently.  I have two Panzer IIIs on order right now that should hopefully arrive soon.  One has a 75mm Howitzer on it and the other is a Flame Tank.  Once they are painted up I should be ready to play some tank battles, as I will have a Tiger, a Stug G, 2 Panzer IIIs, and a Puma for my army.

See you next time.

Rockets & Robots

A recent commission for a new client.  He wanted me to match the paint scheme of the AT43 Red Block models (with a more of a Khaki color instead of the green).

Part 1 of a larger commission I have been working on for a while for my regular Bolt Action client.  This army is actually Scottish, as seen by the heads of the Universal Carrier drivers and crew.

Lots more to come.

Thinking Space Marine

Well jeez, the new space marine codex has me thinking about 40k again (this will make my friend Chris happy). I have to say I think the new codex is very well done, especially the return of Chapter Tactics (though being able to ally 2 marine list with different Chapter Tactics seems to encourage min-maxing, at least to me).

So current I am bouncing back and forth between wanting to add to my existing Howling Griffons or starting up Crimson Fists to ally with said Howling Griffons.  I  know I want a unit or two of Centurions and some of the new Stern guard minis. That is as far as I have gotten.

More as I think of it.

2013 Goals Update!

I thought I would do a 2013 goal review now that we are halfway through the year.  You can see my goal status to the right of this article.  I keep that as up to date as I can.

To Sum up:

1. Dust Warfare -  I exceeded my goal for painting SSU and need 3 game to reach my playing goal.  No progress on Axis (though could change with new announced Wave 8 stuff today).  Sold my Allied Army in hopes of Vrill Aliens that were rumored for Gencon, not going to happen as it turns out.

2. 40K - Little to no progress here, I have paired down my collection to the point where I have a bunch of unpainted Chaos Marine stuff, my Howling Griffons, my 30K Project Death FW Army, and some misc stuff here and there.  To bad I didn't set this as just a GW army project as I am closing in on finishing up 1500pt of WFBs currently.

3. Warmachine/Hordes -  I am doing really well here.  I have just surpassed my painting goal for non-Warcasters/Warlocks this past weekend, I need two more Warcasters/Warlocks to reach my goal, and I have already played over double the number of games I originally targeted for the year.  Though not originally part of the goal structure, I have also painted 61pts and 1 warlock worth of Hordes models on Commission too.

4. Flames of War -  This one isn't going to be successful because as of the beginning of June I decide to sell off the rest of my FoW models since I had not played the game in over 2 years.

5. War & Conquest - I have made a good start on this project, but unfortunately WFB has knocked this project off my painting table for the foreseeable future.  W&C is getting played a bit at my LGS right now, but with out a painted army I haven't been up for playing.  At some point I want to put some time into building a 100 years war W&C army as my Saxon do not really fit time period wise with the other armies owned at the shop which are all from time periods before or after my Saxons.

6. Relic Knights - Unfortunately the release of the Relic Knights from kickstarter was delayed due to Manufacturing delays.  Hopefully we will see models this Fall.

7. Start Up To 4 New Games/Projects - I am currently at 3 new games/projects for this year, unfortunate they have all pretty much stalled out.  The first is a 15mm Fantasy game called Pride of Lions.  This was big at my LGS for a good while Winter/Spring.  I have a rule for myself, when a new game you are not 100% sold on starts up at the shop, wait 6 months and if it is still going strong, then get into it.  I was burned a few times back in 2010 and 2011 so have found this to be a good rule for me.  PoL reached the 6 month mark in March and I purchased an army but before I could get it built and painted PoL stopped being played in the shop.  Sigh.

The Second Project is 2 small 28mm Civil War armies, Union and Confederates (obviously), using perry plastic miniatures.  I did a lot of research and work on this project this spring, but it is currently on hiatus waiting on a gap in my painting queue to get painted up.

The 3rd project is 'In Her Majesties Name', a cool Victorian Steampunk game recently released by Osprey Publishing.  I'd say it is a bit early to say this game has stalled out as I see it more as a now and then kind of game, at least at my LGS.  I have one organization worth of models for it so far (the models are a mix of Spartan Legion & Incursion minis) and plan to get another one in the near future.  There is an organized Demo at a convention I am going to in the middle of July so hopefully this will generate some more desire to play.

8. Participate in 5 Tournaments or Paint Contests - Last year I fell short of my goal in this category, however this year I have already succeeded, playing in my 5th tournament at the beginning of June.  I am already schedule to participate in another Tournament this month, along with my first painting contest.  I think the big change from last year to this year is that I am no longer the Privateer Pressganger for my LGS, so I am able to play more this year as last year I would have been running the tournaments.

9. Reduce the Size of my Collection - I have already had great success this year, with over 1000 models/bases sold, traded, or given away this year.  I have also made over $1,200 in gift certificates at swap-meets this year to put back into my hobby endeavors.  The 3 big purchases I have made with that money this year are a Retribution army for Warmachine, a Circle army for Hordes, and my organization for 'In Her Majesties Name'.  I also have spent some of that money on WFB stuff.

10. Post 52 Blog posts over the course of the year -  I am falling behind on this one, with just 13 on the year so far (including this one).  I think I still have a shot of reaching my goal as I now am part of a blog/podcast group called the Beer Thralls.

11. Total Models painted this year - I set really high painting goals for myself this year and I quickly decided after posting my original list of 10 goals that I wanted to shoot for 1000 models painted this year.  Well I am doing pretty well so far with 492 models completed since January 1st.

More as I have it.

June Update!

Hey guys, how have you been?

As you can see, I have been painting Chaos Warriors for Warhammer Fantasy Battles recently.  My LGS, Huzzah Hobbies, in Ashburn, VA started up a new summer WFB league and I decided to participate.  Above is my the first 1k of models that I have gotten painted up.  Here are some closer pics:

Chaos Warriors of Nurgle + Nurgle Exalted Champ

Dragon Ogres

Chaos Knights of Nurgle

10 Chaos Hounds

I still need to finish up the Daemon Prince and Spawn models I am painting up to use just incase I roll well (or poorly) on the Chaos Warrior Eye of the Gods table.

Well that is it for now.  I will post again when I have more pics of info to share.

Update!

Hey guys, long time no see.  So not much has been happening with me recently, still just chained to the painting desk most days with the occasional break to play some games (recently of Warmachine and Bolt Action) and work my shifts at Huzzah.  I am up to 335 models painted this year with another 50 or so with some paint on them that need to be finished.  Sadly at least 50% are commission minis and not minis in my collection.

Below are some pics of some Table Top quality US Paratroopers I finished back in April and some Skorne Hordes minis I finished back in Feb/March.  Both were commission projects.

Wednesday Workbench

Sigh, what a difference a week can make.  Last week on Wednesday Workbench I talked about finishing up some Khador models I had kicking around mostly finished and then talked about starting into some models for my IK RPG game.  Oh how plans change.

In the last 7 days I:

  • Took on a commission for 28 Skorne minis in exchange for 2 boxes of the new plastic Winterguard and a new plastic Retribution of Scyrah (Ret) Battle Box.
  • Knocked out the first 3 models of above Skorne commission in 2 days, Titans Bronzeback, Gladitator, and Tiberion (Character Gladiator).  Then had severe painters block for the last 4 days
  • Purchased a few Ret models to bring the list up to 15pts
  • Sold a crap ton of miniatures at the Huzzah Hobbies Swapmeet Sunday 2/24, and made $700 in store credit in the process.  I proceed to spend $150 of credit on stuff for me and walked away with a Battlefoam Warmachine Bag (Empty), the board game Eclipse+Expansion, Some additional Ret minis, a bunch more Dust Tactics/Warfare SSU minis, and a few books.
  • I also had a second commission project come in (with no deadline) for some Bolt Action German Stuff.  30 guys and 2 Vehicles.
  • Sunday night I felt inspired by Ret (deciding that I wanted to play them in the new PP League starting up on Tuesday) and got to work blocking out the now 27pts worth of Ret stuff I owned.  All together I am unhappy with what I have done so far (See Below), but it could turn out okay.
  • Monday was just a bad day all around
  • Tuesday I headed to Huzzah around 3 and got in 2 games of Warmachine in the new league, managing to be the first to achieve one of the 6 once per league achievements (called Schematics, league is Machinations: Umbra), by doing 36pts of damage to a Swamp Horror killing it in one got.  I had popped eScorscha's Feat that doubles all damage over the armor stat.  The Spriggan which is P+S 18 was rolling dice +1 on a charge and rolled a 17.
  • I also picked up some more Ret and Khador minis I had ordered that came in.  Still waiting on a few more things for Ret and then I am done buying models them for a while. I also got a a few foam trays for my Battlefoam Warmachine bag, but I still need to order a few more.
  • Today I am supposed to play a 100pt game of Warmachine.  Khador vs Retribution.  It is the first time I will have played a game this large in Mk2.

Wednesday Workbench

Hey guys and welcome to a new segment here on 24 Hour Gamer Geek, Wednesday Workbench.  I got the idea for this segment from my good friend Rushputin over at Warpstone Pile. Each week he posts pics of what he is working on, something I keep intending to do but never get around to.  Hopefully I can keep up with this series, remembering to take pics of what is on my workbench after I get home from work each Tuesday evening.

Yesterday was the last day of a 6 week, Warmachine/Hordes Journeyman (Escalation) league at Huzzah. I did pretty well, placing in the top 3 for points each two week block, but never quite reaching the top.  However I did win the award for best painted 35pt army at the end of the league.  Pictures of the army will be in a post later this week.

Next week starts off the first leg of the 4 part Privateer Press official Machinations league, so I though I would share with you some minis I have been work on to get prepared for it.

First off I have WIPs of two new Warcasters I have been working on.  On the left is Strakov and on the right if Zerkova.

Tuesday Time Capsule #7

Hey guys and welcome to another Tuesday Time Capsule!

Today I wanted to share with you these old school mins that I found in the Time Capsule Case.

The top mini is actually one of the last few painted example of the basic Chaos Marines from my original Deathguard army.  This army is what started my love affair with Chaos and while not my first attempt at painting was the first army I tried highlighting and shading on.

Below on the left is a Rogue Trader Era Chaos space marine that I got in trade (not my paint job) some time in the past.  I was really happy when I found this mini as I have a bunch of these old school models that I have collected over the years that I wanted to include in my new Chaos Army.  I was however missing a heavy weapons gunner... which I now am not.

And Finally on the right is another old school Rogue Trader era mini with a a broken weapon.  This one is a Nurgle worshipper that has been mutated my Papa Nurgle into a part man/ part fly mutant.  Many of the early chaos marines and warrior and a variety of chaos mutation and armor styles to them, not like the horns, skulls, spikes, and tentacles we see today.

Intro to Dust Warfare! Part 2

Hey guys, Jay here with part 2 of an Intro to Dust Warfare.  Today we are going to talk about the phase of each round and the basic game mechanics.  I am also going to share with you some pics of some of the cool models for Dust Warfare that I own.  In the future I will be posting articles introducing models and units from all 3 of the factions (Yeah I own armies for all 3).  These articles will include pics of the models (sometime including pre-paint, work in progress, and/or finished paint jobs) in my collection.  I will also try to include some battle reports for both Dust Tactics (I will be playing in a 6 week league starting in late January) and Dust Warfare.  Now lets get on with the good stuff.

Tuesday Time Capsule #6

Hey guys, Huron here, welcome to another Tuesday Time Capsule!

I have a short one for you today.  Below are some Old School Eldar minis that I found in the Time Capsule case.  Many of them are from 2nd and 3rd edition.  Back then Eldar Guardians did not always use Shurken Catapults like they do today.  In fact to you had to pay extra for the catapults, they instead came with las-rifles.

The original plastic guardians, of which all of the weaponless guardians above are from came with a plastic lasgun bit.  However when 3rd Edition rolled around and GW decided to remove las-guns from the eldar list and make them all use Shurken Catapults, GW repackaged the plastic guys with metal Catapult bitz.  If you look closely you can also see a Warlock with Las-pistol, a plastic jetbike pilot, one of the original swooping hawk models, and on the far right the original Dire Avenger Exarch.

That is it for this week, see you next week for more Tuesday Time Capsule.

Hey guys welcome to another Tuesday Time Capsule with your host.... HURON!

This week I want to talk about the minis pictured above.  They are a ragtag group and come from several manufactures and games.

And Hello to 2013!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Welcome to the first post of 2013, here on 24 Hour Gamer Geek!  Yesterday I shared with you the results of the hobby goals I set for myself in 2012, and while I only really completed 2 of my goals last year, I think I can do better in 2013.

One of the nice things about blogging is that you can go back and look at old posts from years past and see what you were thinking and working on back then, which can sometime give you inspiration to pick up old projects or start new ones.  After writing my 2012 goals completion post yesterday, I decided it might be fun to look back at my old goals completion post from last year and see how things compared to now.  Funny how quick things can change. One big change I forgot to mention in my previous post was the end of my old blog, Blood & Blades and the start of 24 Hour Gamer Geek.

Funny how things like that can slip your mind.  Back at the end of July I decided to end my previous blog Blood & Blades because I no longer felt the title represented what I was about Hobby wise.  Blood & Blades was started as a place for me to document my work and motivate me to get stuff done.  However it quick changed into a place for me to post battle reports, tourney reports, and track my progress while building my Howling Griffons army.  Then, when I tired of that it documented my progress with multiple other projects and games.  That lead to me start to Podcast with Bill from The Dead Tau Project on Gamers Lounge.  Once GL had gotten going my blogging began to suffer and it has never really reach the level of posting I had in the first to years of Blood & Blades, even after leaving GL.

A number of real life problems have blocked my way the last 2 years or so and have caused me periods of sometimes months at a time where I have been detached and unfocused on anything, let alone Blogging.  However since starting 24 Hour Gamer Geek in August, slowly I have started to crawl back into the Blog-i-sphere and share with you more of my thoughts.  2013 is going to breath new life into my Blogging profile as I continue to expend more times writing Blogs, now that I have begun writing for the WWPD Network and The Paint Dragon as well.  Should be an exciting year!

Here are my goals for 2013 and some commentary on what I am thinking about each one now, at the start of the year:

Tuesday Time Capsule #4

Hey guys, HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Time for another Tuesday Time Capsule!

My head is spinning and I have to work tonight so lets keep this short.  This week lets talk backpacks... Chaos backpacks.  While there are all sort of things in the Time Capsule case to see I thought it interesting the number of chaos marine back packs I found.

These backpacks come for all different time periods too.  The ones still on sprue and a few of the loose ones are from Second Edition 40K while the the plastic ones below them are of a newer vintage.  If you look close you will see a mix of both new and old metal backpacks too, include 2 old raptor jump packs.

Well that is it for today.  Tune in next week for more models and bitz from the past.
